  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp peppermint extract
  • Red gel icing color
  • Optional: sprinkles or crushed peppermint

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add in the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract; mix until combined.
  4. Gradually incorporate the dry mixture until just combined; avoid overmixing.
  5. Split dough in half; color one half with red gel icing color.
  6. Chill both halves in the refrigerator for 2–3 hours.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Shape each cookie by twisting together ropes of red and white dough into candy cane shapes.
  9. Bake for about 5–7 minutes until set but not browned; cool before serving.
