  • 2 pounds medium to large shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup honey (or maple syrup)
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/4 cup orange juice (no sugar added)
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Green onions and sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together garlic, soy sauce, honey, orange zest, orange juice, mirin, and crushed red pepper flakes to create the sauce.
  2. Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels and coat them evenly in cornstarch in a large bowl.
  3. Heat about an inch of canola oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat until hot.
  4. Fry the shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Drain cooked shrimp on a plate without using paper towels.
  6. Pour out excess oil from the pan and add the prepared sauce; warm it up for about 1-2 minutes.
  7. Toss the fried shrimp in the sauce for another minute until well-coated.
  8. Serve immediately garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.
