Ingredients
For the Ground Beef & Gravy:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
- ½ teaspoon paprika (optional, for extra flavor)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and cubed
- 4 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup milk (or more, as needed)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
- Boil the potatoes: In a large pot, cover the potatoes with water and bring to a boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender.
- Drain and mash: Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy. Add more milk if needed for creaminess.
Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef
- Brown the beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is fully browned. Drain excess grease.
- Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Step 3: Make the Gravy
- Melt butter: Push the beef to one side of the skillet and add butter to the empty space. Let it melt.
- Add flour: Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to create a roux.
- Pour in beef broth: Slowly whisk in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
- Season and simmer: Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, thyme, and paprika. Stir well and let it simmer for 5 minutes until thickened.
Step 4: Assemble & Serve
- Spoon the creamy mashed potatoes onto plates.
- Top with the rich ground beef and gravy mixture.
- Garnish with fresh parsley (optional) and enjoy!
Notes
Use Freshly Cooked Potatoes – This keeps the mashed potatoes light and fluffy.
Brown the Beef Well – This adds extra depth and flavor to the gravy.
Thicken the Gravy More – If you like a thicker gravy, simmer a few extra minutes or add a cornstarch slurry (1 tsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water).
Make it Spicy – Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for heat!
