- 1 lb ribeye or sirloin steak – Thinly sliced for tenderness.
- 1 tablespoon olive oil – For sautéing.
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced – Caramelized for extra flavor.
- 1 small green bell pepper, thinly sliced – Adds crunch and sweetness.
- ½ cup mushrooms, sliced – For extra umami flavor.
- 2 cloves garlic, minced – Boosts the flavor.
- ½ teaspoon salt – Enhances the taste.
- ½ teaspoon black pepper – For a little kick.
- ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce – Adds a deep, savory note.
For Assembling the Sandwich:
- 4 sub rolls or hoagie buns – Lightly toasted.
- 4 slices provolone or American cheese – For that signature melt.
- 2 tablespoons butter – To toast the rolls.
Instructions
Step 1: Prep the Ingredients
- Thinly slice the steak against the grain for the most tender bites.
- Slice the onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms.
Step 2: Sauté the Veggies
- Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
Step 3: Cook the Steak
- In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced steak and season with salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the steak is browned and cooked through.
- Add the sautéed veggies back into the skillet and mix everything together.
Step 4: Melt the Cheese
- Place slices of provolone or American cheese over the steak mixture.
- Cover with a lid for 1 minute until the cheese melts.
Step 5: Toast the Rolls
- Spread butter on the inside of each sub roll and toast on a griddle or skillet until golden brown.
Step 6: Assemble the Sandwich
- Load the cheesy steak and veggie mixture into the toasted sub rolls.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
- Use Thinly Sliced Steak – Freezing the steak for 15 minutes before slicing makes it easier to cut thin.
- Don’t Overcrowd the Pan – Cook the steak in batches if needed for a perfect sear.
- Toast the Bread – A toasted roll holds up better and adds extra crunch.
- Try Different Cheeses – Mozzarella, cheddar, or Swiss also work well.
